If you spend eight to ten hours a day in front of computer displays, laptops, and phones, the physical sensation is unmistakable: a dry, gritty feeling across the cornea, a dull ache behind the brow, and an involuntary tightening of the neck and facial muscles. These symptoms are collectively known in ophthalmology as digital eye strain (or Computer Vision Syndrome).
When we began building Easy Eyes, we surveyed the landscape of eye-exercise software. We found two extremes: apps that claimed unproven "natural vision cures" that magically eliminate the need for glasses, and apps that were little more than noisy stopwatch timers with jarring alarm bells. We built Easy Eyes to establish a third path: a calm, beautifully crafted companion strictly grounded in what clinical ophthalmology and ergonomics actually support.
1. Accommodation Fatigue and the 20-20-20 Standard
When you look at a nearby screen (typically 40 to 60 cm from your face), the circular ciliary muscle inside each eye must continuously contract. This contraction relaxes tension on the zonular fibers, allowing the crystalline lens to thicken and increase its refractive power. Holding any skeletal or smooth muscle in continuous contraction for hours induces metabolic fatigue.
The 20-20-20 rule—recommended across major ophthalmological bodies including the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the American Optometric Association (AOA), the National Eye Institute (NEI), and French clinical guidance (SNOF, Dr. Marc Timsit)—is straightforward:
The 20-20-20 Rule
Every 20 minutes of close screen work, look at an object at least 20 feet (6 meters) away for at least 20 seconds.
Why 20 feet (6 meters)? In optical terms, rays of light arriving from 6 meters or farther are essentially parallel. At this distance, the ciliary muscle completely relaxes into its resting state, releasing sustained accommodative strain.
2. The Blink Deficit and the Kim et al. (2020) Trial
The second primary driver of digital eye strain is dry eye caused by reduced and incomplete blinking. Under normal conversational conditions, humans blink approximately 15 to 18 times per minute. When staring intently at digital displays, studies consistently demonstrate that spontaneous blink frequency drops to 5 to 7 blinks per minute.
Worse, a large proportion of blinks during screen reading are incomplete: the upper eyelid descends partially but fails to touch the lower lid margin. Without full lid contact, the meibomian glands lining the eyelid margins fail to express their vital lipid secretions onto the tear film. The aqueous tear layer quickly evaporates, leaving dry patches on the corneal epithelium.
Our Complete Blink Reset mode is based directly on clinical research by Kim et al. (Contact Lens & Anterior Eye, 2020). In a randomized controlled trial, participants who practiced structured 10-second complete blinking exercises (closing fully for 1–2 seconds without squeezing) every 20 minutes showed:
- A statistically significant reduction in the rate of incomplete blinks.
- Significant improvement in tear film break-up time (TBUT).

3. Extraocular Mobility and Static Gaze Angles

4. Autonomic Balance: Pairing Eye Rest with Resonant Breathing
Visual strain does not happen in isolation from the autonomic nervous system. Intense cognitive tasks and screen deadlines trigger sympathetic nervous system activation, elevating heart rate, reducing heart rate variability (HRV), and creating muscular tension around the temples and neck.
To address this, Easy Eyes pairs eye rest with three evidenced breathing protocols:
- Coherent / Resonance Breathing (5.5 breaths/min): Inhaling for 5.5 seconds and exhaling for 5.5 seconds aligns respiratory sinus arrhythmia with baroreflex rhythms, maximizing parasympathetic tone and HRV (c.f. Scientific Reports, 2023).
- Box Breathing (4-4-4-4): Used by high-performance performers to rapidly stabilize arousal during stressful working sessions.
- 4-7-8 Calm: Dr. Andrew Weil's classic method (inhale 4s, hold 7s, exhale 8s) to downregulate nervous excitation before sleep.
5. What Eye Exercises Cannot Do (Our Non-Negotiable Honesty)
We believe user trust is earned through uncompromising medical honesty. For over a century, pseudoscientific programs such as the Bates method have falsely promised that eye exercises can cure refractive errors and discard eyeglasses.
The position of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) is unequivocal: no eye exercise program can correct myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), astigmatism, or presbyopia (age-related loss of reading focus). Refractive errors result from the physical axial length of the eyeball or the curvature of the cornea and lens, which are anatomical dimensions unaffected by eye exercises.
